Every year, hundreds of volunteers fan out across Florence County to clean and restore the rivers, creeks, and streams that are the lifeblood of our community. From the Great Pee Dee River to Jeffries Creek and the smaller waterways that wind through our neighborhoods, our rivers face constant threats from litter, illegal dumping, and stormwater runoff.

Beach Sweep/River Sweep is South Carolina’s largest one-day volunteer cleanup event of its kind. Every 3rd Saturday in September, or when local teams pick a date, thousands of South Carolinians clear beaches, rivers, lakes, marshes, and swamps of aquatic debris. The cleanup, organized by the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium  and South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, has taken place annually since 1988 – when Sea Grant first started it. The Sweep takes place in conjunction with the International Coastal Cleanup, coordinated by The Ocean Conservancy.

On River Sweep day, volunteers of all ages wade in with gloves, trash bags, and a shared determination to protect the water we all depend on. In a single day, crews remove thousands of pounds of trash — tires, bottles, furniture, and debris that harm wildlife, contaminate water, and diminish the natural beauty of Florence County. Locally, residents can help keep our waterways free of trash and debris by participating in the Beach Sweep/River Sweep.  Cleanup supplies will be provided and volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. All volunteers will be required to sign the liability waiver below. A parent or guardian must sign for participants under 18, and all participants under 15 must be accompanied by an adult

What makes River Sweep special is that the results are immediate and visible. Stretches of creek that were eyesores in the morning become places where wildlife returns, kids can explore, and neighbors feel proud again by afternoon. It’s hard work — and it’s one of the most rewarding days of the year.

No experience is needed. We provide everything — gloves, bags, waders, grabbers, safety briefings, and plenty of water. Just bring your energy and a love for Florence County’s natural spaces. Individuals, families, corporate teams, scout troops, church groups, and school clubs are all welcome.
