For Immediate Release
Keep Florence Beautiful (KFB) will host a two-part environmental education workshop for Florence County educators.
On Saturday, October 22, Keep Florence Beautiful will host a free, two-part environmental education workshop for Florence County K-12 educators. Participating teachers will receive training in DHEC’s “Action for a Cleaner Tomorrow” curriculum and in the Green Steps Program for Environmental Education. They will also receive a copy of the “Action” curriculum, recertification credit, lunch, a t-shirt, and classroom supplies.
The “Action” curriculum is a national award-winning kindergarten through 12th grade, activity-based, interdisciplinary curriculum supplement that is aligned with the newest South Carolina Standards. Green Steps is an environmental education initiative that encourages individual schools to take annual steps toward becoming more environmentally responsible by focusing on students’ “learning, doing, and teaching others.” Though Green Steps has been in existence since 2003, Sneed Middle School is the only Florence County school that currently participates.
Lisa Perry, 7th Grade Science teacher, is the Sneed Green Steps Team leader and has used the “Action” curriculum in her classroom for five years. “When I first learned about Green Steps, I was surprised at the number of projects I already involved my students in that fit into the Green Steps model of ‘learn, do, teach.’ I appreciate that ‘Action’ is hands-on, engaging, and allows students to see that sustainable practices can be economically, aesthetically, and environmentally rewarding both to them and the wider community.”
Participation is limited to 40 educators, and interested parties should visit the following link to register: http://tinyurl.com/eeregistration2016.
