Volunteers needed for local Beach Sweep/River Sweep
Residents can help keep local waterways free of trash and debris by participating in the 2015 Beach Sweep/River Sweep. The cleanup will take place on Saturday, September 19, 2015 along the Florence Trail System behind Naturally Outdoors.
The Florence Darlington Stormwater Consortium and Keep Florence Beautiful are teaming up to clean this popular portion of the Florence Trail System that meanders through the Jeffries Creek Watershed.
Those interested in volunteering should meet at 9:00 AM in the parking lot of Naturally Outdoors. A tent with cleanup supplies will be set up near the Ovis Hill Farmers Market. Volunteers are encouraged to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. All volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver. A parent or guardian must sign for participants under 18 and all participants under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information, visit www.keepflorencebeautiful.org or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
The statewide Beach Sweep/River Sweep event is organized by S.C. Sea Grant Consortium and S.C. Department of Natural Resources. Last year, 998 volunteers collected 19,090 pounds of litter and debris from inland locations while 3,116 volunteers collected 27,461 pounds of litter and debris from coastal locations including cleanups via watercraft. Now in its 27th year, Beach Sweep/River Sweep is the largest one-day litter cleanup of South Carolina’s beaches and waterways.
