Report a Litter Bug

If you have a cell phone, you can now report litter incidents in real time with Litter Busters, a toll-free litter hotline from PalmettoPride, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), and the state Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The next time you see someone unlawfully discarding trash, litter or debris, call the Litter Buster's Hotline at 1-877-7-LITTER, which rings directly into the DNR statewide radio dispatch headquarters in Columbia. Be prepared to give the DNR dispatcher as much detailed information as possible; such as, a vehicle tag number or boat registration number, a general description of the vehicle or boat and the location and nature of the littering violation. After DPS matches the reported tag number to the registered owner of the boat or vehicle, PalmettoPride will then send a letter to the owner stating that someone, in his or her vehicle or boat, was observed littering.

The letter's recipient will be given a courtesy notice and told that a littering conviction could result in fines of between $200 and $1000. If the littering offense is prosecutable, law enforcement will handle the investigation. Like DNR's Operation Game Thief reporting program, rewards will be applicable to all incidents that result in a conviction.

Florence has always been a city filled with people of character, just like you.  That's why the "Keep Florence Beautiful" campaign needs YOU to help transform our city into one that is litter-free and more pleasant for everyone who lives here or just passes through.  By practicing the following traits, YOU can make a difference in the future of our community.

RESPONSIBILITY - Responsibility is always throwing your trash in a proper place and reminding others to to the same.  This is the most important element of character when it comes to a litter-free community.

SELF-CONTROL - Self-Control is stopping yourself from littering.  No matter where!  No matter why!  This trait can often be a difficult test of one's character.

INITIATIVE - Initiative is being litter-free simply because it is the right thing to do, without having to be asked or told.  Only you can make the effort to do your part.

CREATIVITY - Creativity is inventing new ways to help Florence become a litter-free community.  Florence needs your ideas on who to sweep the existing trash away and prevent it from ever coming back.

Practicing the traits listed above is an essential step in helping Keep Florence Beautiful.
